  • Nursery / pre-primary teacher (NTT) Nursery to UKG

Needs a 2-year NTT, DPSE or ECCE diploma after Class XII, or a B.Ed in nursery education. Many private play schools accept shorter ECCE or Montessori certificates.

See jobs: Nursery / pre-primary teacher (NTT)
  • Primary teacher (PRT) Classes I-V

PRT needs a D.El.Ed or B.El.Ed plus CTET or TET Paper I. Since the Supreme Court's August 2023 ruling, a B.Ed is not accepted for Classes I-V.

    See jobs: Primary teacher (PRT)

Needs a Master's in your subject (at least 50%) along with your B.Ed.

    See jobs: Post-graduate teacher (PGT)
  • Special educator All classes

With your B.Ed, a 1- or 2-year RCI diploma in special education opens special-educator posts. Demand is strong: CBSE requires a special educator in every secondary school.

    See jobs: Special educator
  • Physical education teacher (PET) All classes

Needs a B.P.Ed after graduation. Some states accept a D.P.Ed for primary classes.

  • List your school internship on your teaching profile: the school, the classes and how many lessons you taught. Principals value it.
  • Music, art, computer and counsellor posts follow their own rules, usually a degree or diploma in that field (psychology for counsellors), and generally need no TET.

Guidance only, not legal advice. Based on NCTE, CBSE and Supreme Court rules as of October 2026. States, boards and schools add their own conditions (marks, age, language), and minority-run schools are currently exempt from the TET rule. Planning to grow? Since the Supreme Court's September 2025 ruling, schools covered by the RTE Act need TET-qualified teachers for promotion as well as appointment.

Every state, board and school sets its own rules, so check the advertisement.

CTET and TET

CTET and state TETs, explained simply

To teach Classes I-VIII you need a Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). Here is what to know before you register.

Paper I
Paper II

How many pass CTET (February 2026)

It is tough: in the February 2026 exam, about 34% passed Paper I and about 19% passed Paper II (CBSE results). Start early and practise past papers.

  • CTET is an eligibility test, not a job. Passing it gives no right to a job; schools still choose through their own demo class and interview.
  • Classes IX-XII: there is no national TET yet. A CTET for these classes has only been proposed.

CTET: Central Teacher Eligibility Test

Conducted by
CBSE, under NCTE guidelines.
Papers
Paper I for Classes I-V, Paper II for Classes VI-VIII. Take both to teach Classes I-VIII.
Format
150 multiple-choice questions in 2½ hours, with no negative marking.
Pass mark
60% (90 out of 150). Schools may give reserved categories a concession under their own policy, often 55%.
Validity
For life since 2021 (it was 7 years before), unless the government notifies otherwise. No limit on attempts; certificates are on DigiLocker.
Who can sit
Anyone with the required qualification, including final-year B.Ed and D.El.Ed students.
Where it counts
Central government schools such as KVS and NVS, and schools in Delhi and other union territories. CBSE schools need CTET or a state TET for Classes I-VIII, and many private schools accept CTET.

Exam dates change, so check the latest bulletin and dates only on the official website.

Demo class kit

Ace your demo class

In most private schools the demo class is the round that decides. It is a short lesson, usually 10 to 40 minutes, often with real students and sometimes on a topic given that morning. Prepare with this checklist.

Your demo lesson checklist

  1. One clear objectivePick a topic you can teach well in the time. Write the objective on the board: 'Today we will learn to…'.
  2. A hook in the first two minutesOpen with a question, a picture, a quick activity or an everyday example that makes the class curious.
  3. Neat board workPlan the board: date, topic, key words and one worked example. Write big, and face the class while you explain.
  4. Get students talkingAsk open questions, call students by name and give them time to think before you answer for them.
  5. Check understandingUse a quick check: thumbs up or down, two questions on the board, or a student explaining it back. Treat wrong answers kindly and teach from them.
  6. Include every childTeach for the student who finds it hardest, bring in the back benches and use simple words. Switch to Hindi or the local language if it helps.
  7. Keep timePlan for five minutes less than you are given, keep a watch in view, and drop the extra example if you run late.
  8. Close stronglySum up in three points, give one exit question or a short homework, and thank the class and the panel.

Your school internship counts. Tell the panel which school and classes you taught during your B.Ed or D.El.Ed internship, and how many lessons.

What to carry

Two printed copies of your lesson plan, any teaching aid you need (a chart, flashcards, real objects), your marksheets and certificates (originals and photocopies), your CTET or TET certificate and an ID proof.

Questions principals often ask

  1. Tell us about yourself. Why do you want to teach?
  2. How will you handle your first day with a class of 40?
  3. A student keeps disturbing the class. What will you do?
  4. How will you help a child who is falling behind?
  5. Explain a basic idea from your subject the way you would to your youngest class.
  6. How will you use a smart board or other technology in your lessons?
  7. How will you keep children safe, in school and online?
  8. Will you take extra duties, such as class teacher, events or substitution periods?
  9. What salary do you expect, and when can you join?

What principals look for in a fresher

  • A subject that matches the vacancy
  • CTET or a state TET for Classes I-VIII
  • Real teaching practice from your internship
  • Clear spoken and written English, plus the local language
  • A few lesson plans you can show
  • Readiness to take on extra duties
  • Comfort with smart classrooms and computers

Salary reality check

What new teachers really earn

Honest numbers help you plan. Pay varies a lot by city, board and school, so read these as averages, not a promise.

Average monthly pay of private-school teachers, 2021-22
TeachersAll agesUnder 30
Primary₹11,086₹7,718
Secondary₹13,412₹8,969

Source: Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2021-22, analysed by CETE, TISS (2023). Figures are in 2021-22 rupees.

For comparison, government pay follows the pay commission: at KVS a PRT starts on a basic pay of ₹35,400 a month (Level 6), a TGT on ₹44,900 (Level 7) and a PGT on ₹47,600 (Level 8), plus allowances. Those posts are filled through a separate recruitment exam.

Every vacancy on Teachers Consultancy shows its salary range, so you can compare before you apply.

Before you accept an offer, get these in writing

  • Designation (PRT, TGT or PGT) and the classes you will teach
  • Monthly in-hand salary, CTC and the yearly increment
  • PF and ESI
  • Probation period (often one year) and confirmation
  • Notice period, leave and working hours
  • Extra duties, transport and fee concession for staff children

More than half of private-school teachers work without a written contract (PLFS 2021-22). Asking for one is normal and professional.

Questions freshers ask

Your questions, answered

I am in my final year. Can I apply now?

Often, yes. You can sit CTET in your final year. Trainee and assistant-teacher roles welcome final-year students, and some schools take final-year students for regular posts if you can join after your results. Each vacancy lists what it needs, so check before you apply.

I have a B.Ed. Can I teach Classes I-V?

Not as a PRT. In Devesh Sharma v. Union of India (11 August 2023), the Supreme Court held that a B.Ed is not a valid qualification for primary teachers. PRT posts need a D.El.Ed or B.El.Ed plus CTET or TET Paper I. With a B.Ed, aim for Classes VI-X as a TGT (with Paper II for Classes VI-VIII), or Classes XI-XII as a PGT with a Master's. Even if an exam bulletin lets B.Ed holders sit Paper I, that does not make them eligible for PRT jobs.

Is my CTET valid for life?

Yes. Since 2021, CTET certificates are valid for life (earlier it was seven years) unless the government notifies otherwise, and the change covered older certificates too. Most states have made their TET certificates lifetime-valid as well; check your state's notification to be sure.

Do you charge teachers anything?

No, never. Teachers Consultancy is free for teachers: no registration fee, no placement fee and no deposit. If anyone asks you to pay for a teaching job, it is a scam. Report it on the national cyber-crime portal or call the cyber-fraud helpline 1930.

Report a fraud on cybercrime.gov.in(opens in a new tab)

How do demo lessons work on Teachers Consultancy?

You choose a demo-lesson task for your subject and classes, plan the lesson (how you open, explain, check understanding and handle a wrong answer) and submit it within the time limit. A trained human reviewer scores it against a clear rubric, and the skills you show well are marked "Proven in a demo lesson" on your teaching profile. Schools may still hold their own demo class before they hire.

What does "fresher-friendly" mean?

A fresher-friendly vacancy asks for no prior teaching experience: the school has not set any minimum years of experience. You still need the qualifications the vacancy lists, such as a B.Ed, D.El.Ed or CTET.

CTET or my state TET: which should I take?

It depends on where you want to teach. Central schools such as KVS and NVS, and schools in Delhi and other union territories, need CTET. State government and aided schools follow the state TET, and many accept CTET too. Private schools may accept either, so look at the vacancies you want.

Will schools see my name and phone number?

Only when you choose. Schools looking for teachers see your skills, qualifications and demo-lesson results, not your name or contact details. Your full profile goes to a school only when you apply to its vacancy or accept its request.
